[ARCHIVED] News Release - No Wipes Down the Pipes, Even if a Product Says It Is "Flushable"

PURCELLVILLE, Va. March 20, 2020 — The Town of Purcellville is reminding citizens not to flush “flushable wipes”. Due to the recent demand for flushable wipes and sanitary products relating to the COVID-19 crisis, the town is reminding people to dispose of these items properly.

Convenience wipes such as baby wipes and hygienic wipes, as well as paper towels, might be labeled as “disposable” or “flushable” but these products SHOULD NOT be flushed down the drain. They should be disposed of in your household or business trash receptacle. These items do not disintegrate in water the way toilet paper does. This practice can cause a sanitary sewer backup in your home or your neighbor’s home, creating a costly and serious threat to the health and safety for all those affected.
