[ARCHIVED] News Release - Officer Calhoun Receives MADD Award

PURCELLVILLE, Va. September 24, 2019— On Tuesday, September 24th the Mother’s Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) held their annual award ceremony at George Mason University’s Woodbridge campus to recognize the top local law enforcement officers in helping to prevent drunk and drugged driving.  Officer Joshua Calhoun was awarded the MADD Law Enforcement Officer Award for the Purcellville Police Department (PPD) for the highest number of DUI arrests for 2018.

Unfortunately there are approximately 10,265 deaths from impaired driving across the United States every year.  What is most upsetting about that statistic is these incidents are 100% preventable by individuals making the right choice not to get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.   While some people do not always make the best decisions, thankfully our officers are here to recognize the signs, and hopefully stop them before an accident occurs.

Officer Joshua Calhoun joined the Purcellville Police Department in January 2018.   During this short time with the PPD, he has already made a significant impact on the safety of the Purcellville community.   Officer Calhoun continuously engages in pro-active DUI enforcement and determent.  He can often be found reaching out to known alcohol establishments in the area in an effort to build partnerships to prevent drunk driving from occurring.  But when needed, Officer Calhoun works to ensure the safety of our streets by identifying violations and apprehending individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.   Even though the town of Purcellville covers only 3.5 square miles, his efforts have reduced the risk of impaired driver injuries and fatalities both within our jurisdiction and beyond the town limits.  Officer Calhoun is commended for his actions to prevent and stop drunk and drugged driving by leading the Purcellville Police Department in the apprehension of impaired drivers.

Thank you to Officer Calhoun and the rest of our local law enforcement officers for helping to save lives and keep everyone safe!
