[ARCHIVED] News Release - Prescription Drug Take Back Update

PURCELLVILLE, Va. May 6, 2019 — The Purcellville Police Department collected over 120 pounds of unwanted, unused, or expired prescription drugs during the joint drug take-back event with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on Saturday, April 27th.

Since the inception of the DEA take-back program in 2010, over 8,000 pounds of unwanted and unused prescription medications have been collected in Loudoun County. National studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away- both potential safety and health hazards.

We thank the public for helping to keep these unwanted and unused medications from falling into the wrong hands by coming out and properly disposing of their prescriptions. We will be holding another drug take-back event in the fall of 2019. Details will be forthcoming.
