PURCELLVILLE, Va., September 10, 2018 – While the exact storm track of Hurricane Florence remains uncertain, major flooding, storm surge and wind damage are likely across the Commonwealth of Virginia. As the potential for severe weather from the storm moves near or into our region later this week and into the weekend, the residents in the Town of Purcellville and Loudoun County can expect the possibility of high winds, heavy rain, flooding and the potential of street closures and property damage resulting from fallen trees. We are asking that you take the following precautions to help you better prepare for this potential natural emergency:
-Clean out gutters, storm drains, curbs and ditches to allow for the flow of heavy water during peak rain periods. Make sure all drains and storm water areas are clear of trash, trash cans, leaves, branches, and other items that could result in blocked storm drainage and ponding situations.
-Secure or bring inside any items you may have outdoors to include lawn furniture, basketball hoops, trampolines, etc.
-Restock any disaster supply kits along with medications, food, water, clothing, first aid supplies, bedding and other items you may need.
-Be prepared for extended power outages if the storm does interrupt electrical service. Ensure all phones, computers and backup power devices are charged.
-Sign up for the Town (www.purcellvilleva.gov, Alerts button) and County (www.loudoun.gov/alert) alert systems which include emergency information, news releases and traffic information:
The town has begun emergency planning and preparations for this possible event, and emergency operations will be mobilized prior to the storm, if needed. With the onset of tropical storm force winds and rain only a couple of days away, the time to prepare is now. Prepare your home, business and family for whatever impacts this storm may bring to our area.
