[ARCHIVED] News Release - Permit Requirements for Fences, Decks, and Sheds

PURCELLVILLE, Va. February 2, 2017— As spring and warmer weather are on the horizon, the Town of Purcellville reminds residents and property owners about requirements to obtain permits for any new or replaced fences, decks, sheds, and outbuildings in the Town of Purcellville.

The Town’s Zoning Ordinance describes specific requirements for the location and height of fences within the Town. These regulations are intended to ensure consistency, safety, and community aesthetics. Height regulations depend on the lot location, fence location, and setback from streets.

All fences, decks, sheds, and outbuildings are required to be permitted before construction can begin. This helps property owners ensure that the proposed structure is in keeping with all regulations and will help citizens avoid unnecessary costs of removing or replacing unapproved structures.

The Town also reminds property owners that all contractors must have a business license with the Town of Purcellville in order to do construction activity within the Town limits. The Town encourages all property owners to ask potential contractors if they have a Town business license and to ensure that the contractor will be obtaining a permit. In the end, it is the responsibility and obligation of the property owner to ensure that all necessary permits are obtained.

Any questions about the Zoning Ordinance or fence, deck, shed, and outbuilding regulations can be directed to the Department of Community Development at 540-338-2304.
