[ARCHIVED] News Release - Results from Drug Take Back Day

PURCELLVILLE, Va. October 24, 2016 - The Purcellville Police Department collected 184 pounds of unwanted and expired prescription drugs on October 22, 2016 during our fall drug take-back event.

The Purcellville Police Department and Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, implemented the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) initiative that was established to prevent increased pill abuse and theft. Since the inception of the DEA take –back program in 2010, over 7,000 pounds of unwanted and unused prescription medications have been taken off the streets of Loudoun County including Purcellville.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are increasing at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. These unused and unwanted medications often fall into the wrong hands and are misused or abused, and this program ensures they are disposed of properly.

We would like to thank the public that came out to the Purcellville drop off site on Saturday and the Purcellville Citizens Support Team for their continued support! We will be holding another Drug Take Back event in the Spring of 2017. As the date approaches, we will provide the exact date, time, and location.
