News Release - Artwork Exhibit and Meet-the-Artists Reception

“UP AND COMING” ARTWORK EXHIBIT AND MEET-THE-ARTISTS RECEPTION

PURCELLVILLE, Va. March 3, 2017— The fifth in a series of art exhibits in Purcellville's Town Hall features the work of local artists Michaela Gloeckner and June Jewell.  Gloeckner and Jewell, both Purcellville residents and recent art school graduates, are exhibiting their work in the show entitled "Up and Coming."   The show ends March 31, 2017.  The first floor corridors of Town Hall have a gallery-caliber hanging system which creates an opportunity for local artists to exhibit their work.  Art exhibitions in Town Hall also ensure that all members of the public have access to art.

Michaela Gloeckner graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), was an instructor at LVCC, and currently is Program Director and Head of the Art Department at Nextide Academy.  Gloeckner explains her life in art this way:  "During my time at MICA, I enrolled in a life changing portrait class and quickly fell in love with drawing faces. Studying portraiture, and later the figure, made me feel a passion towards art that I had never experienced before. The challenge of rendering the person in front of you onto a two dimensional surface, accurately, is something I want to spend a lifetime perfecting. In my current practice, I find myself very interested in capturing my subjects’ personality and all of the subtleties that make people individuals. I am also fascinated by how light interacts with the human form so it plays a big role in my work as well. Some artists that influence me are Rembrandt, Sargent, Caravaggio, and Whistler- all for different reasons."

June Jewell has a degree in Graphic Design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing (FIDM) in Los Angeles, CA and states that she has "been creating art for as long as I can remember."  Jewell works in many mediums but says that her passion is painting:  "I love toying with color and nature in fun, childlike ways. I hope to spread the joy and love I have creating each piece to everyone that views it."

A selection of the artists' work is currently on exhibit at Purcellville's Town Hall (221 S. Nursery Avenue).   A Meet-The-Artists reception will take place there on Thursday, March 9 from 5:30 to 7:00pm.  The public is welcome to join Michaela Gloeckner and June Jewell as well as the Purcellville Arts Council for an opportunity to discuss their work and to learn more about the Town of Purcellville's active Arts Council.  The show may otherwise be seen according to regular Town Hall office hours (Mon - Fri 8:00am - 5:00pm except holidays).

Art exhibits are currently being scheduled for April 2017 onward in three-month blocks.  All artwork is decided upon by a jury outside of the Arts Council.  Please send inquiries to the Town of Purcellville, attention: Arts Council at events@purcellvilleva.gov.
